TRASH FACT: Archaeologists study ancient garbage to understand how past civilizations lived. Scientists who study modern-day trash are called garbologists. Our garbage has a whole story to tell about who we are and what’s important to us.

SITTING ON GARBAGE

Remember the great expanses of plastic in our oceans? What if we could take that litter and do something useful with it?

In 2011, designers Azusa Murakami, Alexander Groves, and Kieren Jones developed the Sea Chair Project. They encouraged fishermen to fish for plastic and to then use a mini-furnace to mold the plastic into something useful, like a chair. An attached tag shows exactly where in the ocean its plastic came from. Displayed in museums and exhibitions around the world, the Sea Chair Project is raising awareness about our seas, one seat at a time.

In Paraguay, the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura delights its audiences with instruments made out of garbage. LANDFILLHARMONICMOVIE.COM
